”Some spaces affect you more than others. Most of the time it’s an instant feeling; you open a door to something new and you are drawn to what is inside.”
Swedish design writer, author and editor in chief of Residence Magazine Hanna Nova Beatrice is spot-on in the introductory text of My Residence, the annual English ‘bookazine’ that reached kiosks and newsstands all over the world a couple of days ago. She describes exactly what Magnus and I went through when entering our own house for the very first time.
It has been two and a half years since we moved into our new home – a converted farmhouse in a rural part of southern Sweden. As I’m writing this, the last few months have reignited my love affair with the house – simple things like a good winter cleaning, the repositioning of the desk in our office space, and the putting up of a 3,5 meter high Christmas tree makes me see my surroundings through new eyes.
I am reliving that feeling of excitement that I felt the very first time I set foot in our house. And it is exhilarating.
Seeing one’s home on the pages of a magazine, most recently in My Residence, is something I’ll never really get used to. It is like sharing an intimate part of oneself for everyone to see. At the same time – growing up in a family home that was shared with both friends and strangers – it nevertheless is something I want to do.
Creating a setting where people can meet, be themselves and feel at home is what Magnus and I want most – this vision is at the heart of our own home, as well as the projects we create for TypeO.
Thank you, team Residence – Hanna, Michelle, Imke, Elisabeth and the others – as well as photographer Erik Lefvander, for making us look so good in My Residence.
